Faculty of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences · Strategic Plan

Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies

Year 2 accomplishments, strategic direction and supporting detail.

Year 2 made the research and graduate portfolio more visible, more structured and easier to support. Research themes moved from definition into public-facing implementation, internal funding mechanisms became clearer, Faculty Research Day showcased the breadth of work underway, and graduate-program standards, resources and policies advanced toward a more deliberate quality framework.

What advanced this year

Research themes made visibleThe Drug Discovery and Development webpage and video launched in 2026 featuring 16 researchers; work was already underway on Health Services Research and Pharmacy Education theme pages.
Research support made clearerPilot, bridge and seed supports continued, while matching and supplementary funding was formalized—including up to $15,000 per faculty member per fiscal year when external programs require institutional backing. Direct grant-review and award-nomination support also began.
Graduate quality infrastructureTen draft graduate-program standards across academic program, governance and administration, and resources moved through committee development and broader Faculty engagement. The standards are intended to anchor cyclical quality review, not simply add policy.
Graduate resources & processesThe Graduate Studies Canvas environment was operational by March 2026, with students and faculty added and handbook resources integrated. Committee work also advanced funding policy, admissions timing, and supervisory and examining processes.
The portfolio is moving from isolated supports toward a research-and-graduate ecosystem. Visibility, funding, program standards, information access and community-building increasingly reinforce one another.

Where this work is taking us

  • Foundations: Research themes, Internal funding, Graduate handbook/resources, Program-quality work
  • Making supports usable: Theme launch, Matching/support rules, Graduate Canvas, 10 draft standards
  • Moving toward: Broader research visibility, Stronger researcher support, Additional partnership and funding opportunities, Cyclical graduate QA, Mentorship & career development

What we heard: Faculty and staff asked for research and graduate processes that are easier to navigate, stronger mentorship and fewer hand-offs. Some of that culture of support is already visible through grant-review and award-nomination assistance. More formal mentorship, broader recognition and graduate career-development programming remain priorities for the next phase.

More detail behind this update

For strategic-lead review. The material below is provided to help you check the evidence and proposed updates to the Research and Graduate Studies monitoring record behind the community-facing brief above. It is not intended as presentation content. The proposed record changes are working updates to be confirmed after September reporting.
Candidate indicators for ongoing monitoring 18 candidates

This is a monitoring-development table, not a KPI scorecard. It brings together the evidence currently available for this portfolio and identifies where measures are strong enough to recur, where they are useful as context, and where new implementation or experience measures still need to be built. Final selections will be confirmed with the strategic lead for Year 3 monitoring.

Research visibility, funding and community
The June strategic-plan communication and Research Committee records show implementation rather than aspiration: the first research-theme page/video launched, matching/supplementary support was formalized, pilot/bridge/seed mechanisms continued, and Research Day provided a recurring community showcase.
Graduate quality and information infrastructure
Graduate Committee evidence documents an operational Canvas environment, handbook integration, development of 10 program standards, funding-policy work, revised international admissions timing and evolving supervisory/examining expectations. This allows the brief to say what changed rather than simply “quality work advanced.”
Support culture: implemented versus future
The current Associate Dean reported already interviewing colleagues, identifying award candidates and arranging grant review. Formal mentorship programs, additional workshops, recognition systems, a research FAQ and graduate career-development offerings were described as priorities/hopes and therefore remain future direction, not new project rows.

Evidence completeness and reporting boundary
This revision was reconstructed from the explicit 387-file source inventory and six-portfolio evidence ledger rather than from the previous brief prose. The formal reporting boundary is August 31, 2026. September material is used only where it reports an outcome from the completed reporting period, corroborates work already underway, or describes next-cycle direction. Examples from newsletters illustrate the work but are not treated as additional strategic projects.
